United Kingdom

The United Kingdom (UK) consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The latter three have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast, respectively.

For information about the United Kingdom in general, explore the links near the bottom of this page. For specific information on each of the four countries, please use the map below.

All immigration matters are within the remit of the Home Office. Asylum applications are dealt with by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) which covers all four countries and falls under the Minister for immigration. Once refugee status is granted, integration programmes are the responsibility of the Local Government Authorities (LGA), therefore the provision differs per region. In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, national integration plans and services have been implemented to support refugees and asylum seekers. All refugees in the UK are eligible to work and access mainstream services. Asylum seekers are not eligible to work or access mainstream services and need to apply for a work permit if their skills fall under the shortage of skills category. Asylum seekers who have waited for over 12 months for an initial decision on their application, and are not considered responsible for the delay in decision-making, can also apply for a work permit.
